Hi, I’m Rachel, and I’m a geek. I love science, engineering, technology and math (STEM), and I want to share that passion with you.
I don’t just love STEM, though, I love running, and boating, and dresses and shoes and makeup a million different things. Did I mention my family? I also have an amazing husband, the two coolest kids on Earth, and a great big support network of close friends and family.
You don’t have to like everything I like, or want to share my life path – my goal is to show you that you can be a total geek, and still be a normal everyday person at the same time. And while we’re on that note, geek can be a harsh, judgy term for some people, so I prefer to call myself the STEMinista. Doesn’t that sound nicer? It’s not lame, or geeky, or dorky to be smart – it is awesome and empowering and it can take you places you’ve never imagined.
I am a research professor, with degrees in physics and biomedical engineering. I am involved in a lot of really cool, cutting edge medical research work – I love my job because the technologies and devices I’m making could make a huge difference in the way we understand and treat diseases in the future. I have the greatest job in the world (to me), and it is only possible because I’ve had so many people along the way support me in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
My goal with this blog is to provide support, encouragement, and information to all you smartypants readers – whether your considering STEM, pursuing STEM, you’re already involved in STEM. Around here, your brilliance is applauded, your hard work is respected, and you should feel empowered – STEMpowered.
